Back to Work

Back to Work

The holidays bring loads of fun and celebrations and usually some extended time off work. As everyone returns it is important to remind ourselves of safety in the workplace and turn on our awareness of risk.

Statistically speaking, Mondays show the highest rate of worker injuries over any other day of the week, and this rate increases following extended periods of time away from work.

The first day back to work has its own unique challenges. It is important to consider how injuries might occur and what you can do about it. Take some extra time to ensure you can follow the necessary steps to avoid injury and harm.

Here are some quick tips on how you can protect your safety, health and that of others:

Make sure you are physically and mentally fit to work before you start your shift.

Do you feel a bit under the weather? Unsure if you can begin work safely? Go and visit your Occupational Health! They can give you a check over and answer any queries before you start.

Warm up your body before any physical labour.

After time off work your body might not be used to the same level of physical activity that you do day in day out at work, especially if you have been relaxing and not been physically active whilst off. Take a moment to stretch your body and don’t rush back into the heavy tasks straight away until you are sure you are ready.

It’s okay to take breaks.

If your body is struggling to catch up, don’t push yourself. You should be able to take breaks when your body needs it. This also applies to office-based workers. If on your holidays you were going for hikes or being active and you then return to work to sit in an office all day, this can cause aches and pains. Ensure that every so often you stand up from your chair, stretch and maybe even go for a walk.

Ensure you can focus on your work and the task at hand.

It’s difficult to switch your brain back on after extended time off work. Take a few moments before you start to mentally prepare and remind yourself of workplace procedures, safety rules and any other vital information.

Complete inspections of your work area, tools and equipment.

Take the time to make sure all necessary safeguards are in place; have the correct PPE and other equipment and tools you need to do the job effectively and safely. Be prepared to stop work if there are any issues that need to be addressed.
