Chemical burns
A worker suffered a chemical burn to his eye whilst filling a high voltage starter motor with electrolyte powder. Although he was wearing light eye protection, a small amount of the electrolyte powder reached the edge of his eye and caused a minor chemical burn.
The burn was intensely painful and caused the injured person to be off work for four days. Fortunately it caused no lasting damage.
What we did – Our Occupational Hygienist established a programme to:
- Introduce a chemical approval procedure to ensure that high hazard materials were identified before use.
- Draw up an inventory of hazardous substances.
- Creating risk assessments.
- Deliver training for managers and supervisors on how to identify.
- Give workers awareness training on chemical risks.
